A tropical cyclone could hit Western Australia’s north coast later this week, with a tropical low hovering off the coast threatening to intensify.
Tropical Cyclone Seroja formed near Timor on Sunday night when it was named as a category 1.
Seroja will remain offshore until Wednesday, but after that it could hit the Pilbara region, a Bureau of Meteorology cyclone expert said.
“We do expect it to move into the waters north of Western Australia later this week,” Peter Clegg, the bureau’s lead tropical cyclone forecaster, told NCA NewsWire.
However, cyclone conditions are not expected in WA until Thursday.
“We expect it to remain a long way offshore for several days and not have any severe impact; it will be Thursday at the very earliest when we could see some impact on the Pilbara coast,” Mr Clegg said.
By the time it hits WA, though, Seroja may be upgraded to category 3. Seroja can be tracked live online.
“As it heads southwest we do expect it to intensify,” Mr Clegg said.
“There is the risk for the northwest coast, around the Pilbara region and all the way down to Gascoigne, that this cyclone may be category 3 by the time it moves down.
“There is a large degree of uncertainty surrounding this weather system until Wednesday; it could remain a long way offshore, and not move in, or it could move in and intensify.
“It is hard to tell after Wednesday which way it could go, so it is important to stay updated with the latest warnings and advice.
“We will update the progress of it every six hours on the BOM website. If it does develop into a warning phase, then we will urge people to follow the advice of emergency services WA.”
