The Sunshine Coast couple killed in an apparent murder-suicide car crash on Easter Sunday are being remembered as “well respected”.
Robert Makara, 69 and wife Elizabeth, 68, died on Sunday after a single vehicle crash on David Low Way at Pacific Paradise.
Early reports suggest their car was travelling south at 7am when it left the road and crashed into a tree.
The couple were trapped inside the car for a period of time before they were able to be cut free and transported to hospital.
Mr Makara died shortly after arrival, while Mrs Makara passed away about 10pm.
On Monday, police confirmed they were investigating whether the crash was a “deliberate act” by the driver.
It’s understood a note was found in the vehicle and at a residence, indicating the crash may have been a murder-suicide.
Mr Makara was well known on the Sunshine Coast for being the director of Makara Constructions, which he runs with his son Tony.
The family-owned business was established in 1971, and had grown to be one of Queensland’s leading experts in “tilt-up constructions” with a “reputation for excellence”, according to the company’s website.
Tributes to the couple have been pouring on social media, with a Sunshine Coast community page writing the couple were “well respected”.
“Family and friends, we’re holding you in our thoughts and prayers,” the post read.
Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash to contact them and would also like to speak to anyone who saw the car, a 2016 white Nissan Qashqai SUV, before the crash, as well as any motorists with relevant dashcam footage of the vehicle.
