Triple M radio star Jane Kennedy bid a tearful farewell to listeners yesterday and thanked co-host Mick Molloy for a pay deal he insisted on.
Kennedy shocked the industry last week when she announced in a press release that she had decided to leave Triple M’s national drive show, Kennedy Molloy.
The show returned from the summer break yesterday and Kennedy joined Molloy to explain her decision to quit.
“I’ve been abandoned,” Molloy joked to Kennedy. “Are you leaving to work your way up the Maxim Hot 100 list? Are you the next Bachelorette? Is it to pursue your illicit affair with Dr Chris Brown?
“Jane Kennedy … could you explain to us your thinking and what’s going on in your life?”
Kennedy broke down in tears and she revealed why she made the decision to walk away from the show after 3.5 years.
“This is what’s going on. In 2020 with lockdown and COVID, I had four teenagers doing homeschooling. That’s pretty full-on to be honest.
“This year I have two university kids, I’ve got a VCE/HSC student, I’ve got two years 9s, all living at home, and I thought I could juggle everything.
“This is the highlight of my day, as you know,” Kennedy said about the radio show. “You put a lot of effort into it and I just felt I couldn’t do 100 per cent with the kids and with a radio show.
“Unfortunately these pesky five teenagers are going to have to come first. That is what’s happened. I’m sorry everyone, I’ve loved it. It’s bloody overwhelming and I want to do the right thing by your kids.”
Molloy joked in response: “That’s where I’m a bit upset. Are you putting your family before me? Are you putting your children (before me)? Did you think of boarding school?”
Kennedy went on to thank her co-host for ensuring that she was always treated equally at the radio station.
“Thank you, Micky, for being a gentleman with me,” she said. “Also, one of the first men in this country to absolutely insist on parity … also calling the show Kennedy Molloy.
“There is no doubt that we’re treated as equals and I just wanted to make sure I let everyone know that,” she said. “Thank you very much for that, Micky, that meant a lot.”
The Triple M drive show will now be hosted solo by Molloy and will be called Molloy.
Molloy airs nationally on Triple M from 4pm weekdays
