Zack Snyder’s DC superhero epic premieres on BINGE, Foxtel

Step aside Chris Hemsworth and company, there’s another band of superheroes confirmed to fly faster than a speeding bullet into Australian loungerooms next month.

In the biggest superhero news in years, the eagerly-anticipated, star-studded epic Zack Snyder’s Justice Leaguewill be available to stream exclusively on BINGE and watch on Foxtel from 6pm on March 18 in line with a huge global release.

BINGE Executive Director, Alison Hurbert-Burns, said: “We live in a society that has been rallying for the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and we couldn’t be more excited that it’s coming to Australians at the same time as the global premiere.

“Australia, mark 18 March at 6pm in your calendars because BINGE is bringing you this special film event.”

The four-hour film, which has been years in the making, is a reworking of the 2017’s Justice League, which teamed the biggest comic-book heroes from the DC Extended Universe including Batman (Ben Affleck), Superman (Henry Cavill), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Flash (Ezra Miller) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher).

But the story of how the new version made it to screens via fan power is almost as fantastical as the Justice League’s plot about marauding aliens trying to find mythical weapons in order to take over the Earth.

The original film was intended to be DC’S answer to rival comic book stable Marvel’s hugely successful Avengers movies but turned out to be box office Kryptonite instead (it made $850 million, but still lost money), drawing lukewarm reviews, and denting future plans for franchise’s connected universe of superheroes. Many fans and critics pointed the finger at director Joss Whedon, who had replaced Snyder behind the camera after he left the project because of a family tragedy, and extensively rewrote and re-shot the film.

Almost immediately a fan movement sprang up rallying around the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut hashtag, demanding a version that would showcase the original director’s darker vision for the film, rather than the more lighthearted take Whedon had used more successfully in his Avengers movies.

Initially Warner Bros, the studio behind the film, said the so-called Snyder Cut was unlikely to see the light of day, but relented in February of last year after sustained fan pressure and an impressive pitch from Snyder himself, committing an additional $90 million for reshooting, re-editing, re-scoring and new special effects.

While the details have been kept tightly under wraps, the new version is said to feature additional characters including Joe Manganiello’s Deathstroke, Henry Lennix’s Martian Manhunter, Amber Heard’s Hera and freshly-shot footage of Jared Leto as The Joker. A new uber-villain and comic book favourite, Darkseid, played by Ray Porter, will also be introduced.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League will premiere at 6pm on March 18 on BINGE and Foxtel’s DC Movies pop-up channel, which will also feature titles including Supergirl, Steel, Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman and Robin, Batman Begins, Wonder Woman, Birds of Prey, Joker, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Catwoman, Watchmen, Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut, The Lego Batman Movie, Lego DC Batman: Family Matters and Lego DC Shazam: Magic and Monsters.
