Why pink has become the pandemic ‘It’ home colour

[ad_1]

Pink has become the colour of choice for Aussie homeowners seeking to soothe pandemic driven anxiety through a domestic makeover.

The pre-COVID popularity of darker hues has slumped as DIYers and those enjoying a more substantial transformation of their homes opt for light colours for a positive, cosy feel and avoid shades such as grey that can make rooms feel claustrophobic.

Australia’s national home and lifestyle retailing giant Bunnings continues to enjoy a 20 per cent or greater year-on-year increase in paint sales as Australians shift money that might have been saved for a holiday into improving their homes.

In early 2021, the emphasis is strongly on pinks.

“I know paint is flying out the door,” Bunnings General Manager of Merchandise, Tracey Lefebure said ahead of the Easter long weekend.

“And the trend colour of the moment seems to be pale/blush pinks.”

Recent research carried out by a team at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in Germany found that people from different parts of the world often associate the same colours with the same emotions.

Lead researcher Dr Daniel Oberfeld-Twistel says the study was the first of its kind and established that colour associations are extremely consistent worldwide.

The study found that “colour-emotion associations [can be] fundamental to our shared cognitive architecture”, such as the feeling of calm generally associated with lighter shades of pink.

Colour stylist for Haymes Paint Wendy Rennie says the vast majority of Australians underestimate how a particular colour can impact our mood.

“People tend to opt for colours that really pop, or whites or neutrals based on the fact that they think it will provide impact, but they generally don’t understand the complexities of colour, nor how it can elevate a mood or create a shift or transform a space completely,” she said.

“In order to select the palette that works for you, you must first think about the mood you hope to create. Then, visit a paint store and select some samples to swatch on walls at home.”
