The coronavirus situation in NSW is “looking good”, according to one senior state minister as government figures prepare to meet on Wednesday to discuss potentially relaxing restrictions.
NSW has not experienced a local case of COVID-19 for more than five weeks.
Speaking to 2GB’s Ben Fordham, Customer Service Minister Victor Dominello said he was about to enter a crisis cabinet meeting to discuss potential changes.
“We’ll have discussions there, but you know … based on the data it is looking good,” he said.
“The people in NSW have stood up over the last 12 months but again these are discussions we are about to have.”
He will address the media later on Wednesday, flanked by NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and chief health officer Dr Kerry Chant.
Restrictions have eased gradually over the last couple of months since the December outbreak.
On February 12 several COVID-19 restrictions were relaxed by the state government.
The biggest one was reverting to a one person per 2 sqm rule for indoor venues and outdoor events and scrapping the mandatory wearing of masks in all settings but public transport and rideshare services.
However, the one person per 4 sqm rule will remained in gyms, while weddings and funerals were still limited to 300 people.
Dancing at weddings was restricted to 20 people and singing in public remained was capped at five people.
At the time Ms Berejiklian said scaling back restrictions struck a balance between wellbeing and staying on top of the virus.
“We want to continue to give the community and businesses the confidence to move forward, especially with the expansion of the 2 sqm rule, which will allow most venues to double their capacity,” she said.
However, an alert was issued for several Sydney suburbs on Tuesday.
More than 110,000 people were put on alert in the city’s southwest after COVID-19 was detected in sewage surveillance.
Fragments of the coronavirus were found on the Auburn Sewage Network that serves more than 110,000 people – the second recent detection in the area.
NSW Health officials advised residents in 24 suburbs to get tested because it is unclear whether the virus fragments are from new cases or from recently recovered cases in the area.
The suburbs are Condell Park, Bankstown, Potts Hill, Birrong, Sefton, Bass Hill, Chester Hill, Regents Park, Chullora, Homebush West, Strathfield, Rookwood, Sydney Olympic Park, Newington, Granville, Clyde, Lidcombe, Auburn, South Granville, Guildford, Silverwater, Rosehill, Berala and Yagoona.
