Wet start over Brisbane, Northern Rivers

[ad_1]

Severe thunderstorms are expected to hit parts of Queensland and New South Wales for the second day in a row on Tuesday, with large hail, heavy rain and damaging winds possible in both states.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Channel Country and Maranoa and Warrego Districts in Queensland shortly after 1pm on Tuesday, with the chance of rain pushing into other southern parts of the state.

New South Wales could be in for thunderstorms on Tuesday afternoon as well, after wild weather on Monday brought gusty winds to Sydney.

Penrith recorded a gust of 78 km/h, but the storm died before it reached the city’s eastern suburbs.

“We can expect to see more of the same today,” the Bureau said.

It comes after a wide band of rain brought dozens of millimetres of liquid gold to parts of Queensland and NSW on Monday and Tuesday morning.

In a wet start to the day, at least 27mm fell in Bowen Hills in Brisbane city before 7am on Tuesday as a wide band of rain stretching from the northern suburbs down into northern NSW moved to sea.

Uki, on the Tweed River, recorded 116mm since 9am on Monday.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Matt Marshall said more rain was possible throughout Tuesday morning before thunderstorms moved in later in the evening.

“The sun might poke through for a few hours on Tuesday, but there’s the potential for the redevelopment of showers and thunderstorms (later in the day),” Mr Marshall said.

“They will more likely to be further inland … And they will be more isolated and patchy, not a big system like we saw this morning.”

The Bureau said patchy rain could hang around Queensland and NSW for the rest of the week.

NATIONAL TUESDAY FORECAST

Sydney: Mostly sunny morning, with a medium chance of showers in the afternoon and evening. Chance of a thunderstorm in the west in the afternoon. Top of 28C.

Melbourne: Mostly cloudy after a foggy start to the day. High chance of light showers in the eastern suburbs, with sunny breaks increasing later in the day. Top of 20C.

Brisbane: Partly cloudy. Slight chance of a shower in the afternoon and evening, and chance of a thunderstorm inland later in the day. Top of 31C.

Adelaide: Mostly sunny. Top of 26C.

Canberra: Partly cloudy. Top of 28C.

Perth: Humid and mostly sunny. Gusts to 70 km/h possible around the hills and foothills on Tuesday morning. Top of 35C.

Hobart: Partly cloudy, slight chance of a shower in the early afternoon. Top of 19C.

Darwin: Partly cloudy, with a medium chance of showers during the afternoon and evening. Top of 32C.

The Bureau has cancelled a marine wind warning for the Coffs and Macquarie coasts, but as of 4am on Tuesday, a strong wind warning is still current for Eden Coast.
