Western United coach Mark Rudan has called for common sense after another VAR call left him questioning the inconsistent use of the technology.
Rudan acknowledged his side were second best all night during their 2-0 loss to Sydney FC at Jubilee Stadium, but he questioned the decision to issue Andrew Durante with a straight red card deep into injury time.
With the match virtually done and dusted the veteran defender‘s hand made light contact with Jordan Swibel, with the referee opting for a straight red after the VAR intervened.

While Rudan emphasised he wasn‘t defending Durante’s actions, the United coach is still smarting after last Sunday’s match against the Western Sydney Wanderers when Besart Berisha had his shirt pulled by Simon Cox in the box, only for the VAR to brush off the incident.
“My question is why do you use the VAR in the 93rd minute when the game is done and dusted as opposed to on Sunday when the game was in the balance and Besart clearly got his shirt pulled and we didn‘t use it on that time?,” Rudan said.
“For me, you‘ve got to use common sense. You look at something that’s going to damage the game and today all that decision has done is damage our football club.
“We want consistency, although we‘ve been told if you’re looking for consistency you’re not going to get it. I’m just one coach, I’m sure the 11 others in the league feel the same way about the inconsistencies.”
United will now be without Durante for their next game against Brisbane, with the club also sweating on the fitness of Alessandro Diamanti and Filip Kurto.
Kurto is recovering from concussion, while Rudan is confident Diamanti will return.
“Knowing those two, particularly Alessandro, there‘s no way he won’t be playing on Sunday – he’s a winner,” Rudan said.
“Dia only just started the game on Sunday (against the Wanderers). He felt something in the warm up and it was touch and go. There‘s no way I’m going to risk someone like Diamanti, so the plan was to make sure he’s ready for Sunday.”
