WA Premier Mark McGowan has shown off his “embarrassing” dance moves during a Fringe World Festival performance in Perth and joked viewer discretion is required before watching the viral video.
Mr McGowan was attending a show with his family on Friday night when he was pulled up on stage, pretended to strip while Nelly’s Hot In Here was played and hula hooped.
“I was being a good sport,” the Premier told reporters on Sunday after footage surfaced on social media.
But Mr McGowan urged news outlets to indicate to their audiences that there should be viewer discretion before watching the footage.
“Once it’s been seen it can’t be unseen,” he joked.
“My kids told me on Friday night, having watched it, that Fringe should be renamed Cringe in light of their dad’s performance.”
With his tongue firmly in cheek, Mr McGowan said a “very strong” performer had “forcibly dragged” him out of the crowd.
“(She) made me embarrass and besmirch the good name of WA,” he laughed.
Asked who taught him to dance, Mr McGowan said he used a technique he had seen his daughter use on TikTok.
“Unfortunately, I’m not as good at it as she is,” he said.
“I had hundreds of people there watching in this unexpected and embarrassing scenario.
“My mind went blank and all that came in was TikTok moves my daughter uses — and you saw the outcome.”
The Premier said he was able to use a hula hoop when he was 10, but his technique had diminished over the years.
