A Victorian Minister has been forced to take three months off work because a chronic health condition flared up and left her in hospital.
Police and Emergency Services Minister Lisa Neville announced the leave period in a statement on Saturday, explaining she has been in hospital since last week as a result of Crohn’s disease.
“The clear advice from my doctors is if I don’t take this period of rest and recovery I will be faced with major bowel surgery and risk long term consequences to the quality and length of my life,” Ms Neville said.
She said the latest episode of the chronic condition is the worst she had faced in the 32 years since her diagnosis.
The disease is a chronic auto-immune disorder which impacts the digestive tract and can spread into deeper layers of the bowel.
Symptoms include abdominal pain, fatigue, weight loss and malnutrition, and there is no cure.
“I am working with my doctors on my recovery and will be guided by their advice on when my physical health can allow me to return to work, which at this stage they believe will be in three months time,” the Minister said.
Premier Daniel Andrews said her responsibilities will divvied up with Richard Wynne to be Acting Water Minister and Danny Pearson to act as the Police and Emergency Services Minister.
Gayle Tierney will also act as the duty member for the seat of Bellarine.
“She has our full support in taking the time to focus on her recovery, and we look forward to welcoming her back as soon as her health allows,” Mr Andrews said.
