A mother-of-three has been jailed for stabbing her newborn baby to death with a pair of nail scissors, before throwing his body into a rubbish bin.
Anastasia Skorychenko is said to have stabbed her son 22 times moments after delivering him on a Ukraine balcony.
The 30-year-old confessed to the crime before a court in the country’s south last week during sentencing.
She will spend at least two years behind bars for the premeditated murder of her child.
Skorychenko said she carried out the act because “the baby was unwanted” and “she could not afford it”.
She had kept her third pregnancy a secret before she went into labour at her home.
Her contractions started at night while her mother and two daughters, aged 7 and 4, were sleeping.
In an effort to not wake them she went to the balcony and crouched over a plastic bin to deliver a healthy boy.
Skorychenko reportedly used nail scissors to cut the infant’s umbilical cord.
While muffling his cries with her left hand she started stabbing him with the scissors she was holding in her right hand, according to court records.
“The mother inflicted 22 stab and cut wounds in the neck, chest, abdomen and limbs of the baby,” a prosecutor said.
“The injuries of varying degrees of severity were inflicted shortly before the child’s death.”
Police say once the baby’s body went limp, Skorychenko put him into a plastic bag and threw it into a dumpster bin nearby her apartment block.
A local female resident called emergency services after she spotted the newborn’s mutilated body the following morning.

During her sentencing she told the court a third child would have worsened her family’s financial situation which led her to commit the horrifying murder.
Examinations showed that she had planned the crime beforehand and hadn’t been suffering from any mental disorders or post-partum depression.
Local media say judges softened the decision because she admitted her guilt.
