The Weeknd’s halftime Super Bowl show 2021 criticised for bad audio

The Weeknd can officially tick performing at the Super Bowl off his bucket list, putting on quite the extraordinary show.

However, there was a slew of viewers who had their complaints, most predominantly over the fact that the audio was really bad.

The singer, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, performed the show pre-recorded instead of live, and is the first artist to have no guest star.

But while the performance looked spectacular, there were a large number of viewers annoyed with the sound quality, unable to hear his voice properly over the music.

One viewer tweeted: “Is it me or does the weeknd sound terrible right now?”

Another added: “that weeknd performance sounded awful. I blame the sound guy.”

A third wrote: “Hey at least we know he was live! The Weeknd handled it super well but I’m so deaf I had to turn up my surround sound”.

Another viewer tweeted: “somebody who hates the weeknd did the sound for his performance bc i could not hear him for sh*t.”

Even some celebrities had their complaints.

The 30-year-old Blinding Lights singer splashed a whopping $9 million of his own cash to perfect the stage ahead of the gig.

Last month, The Weeknd confirmed he’s poured his own money into getting the Super Bowl sets he wants. Although game organisers usually cover production costs, the singer put up $9.1 million to “make this halftime show be what he envisioned,” Billboard reported.

According to the publication, he was hoping to make his show a more “cinematic experience”.

He also explained why the performance might have looked a little different this year.

“Due to COVID and for the safety of the players and the workers, we built the stage within the stadium … I’m not going to tell you anything else because you’ll have to watch on Sunday,” The Weeknd teased at the time.
