A suspected shark sighting forced a popular Victorian beach to shut on Monday, with a young child rushed to hospital.
Ambulance Victoria confirmed paramedics were called to the incident in Connewarre about 6pm where it’s understood a seven-year-old boy was involved.
He was taken to Geelong University Hospital in a stable condition with lower body injuries.
Life Saving Victoria state agency controller Simon White also said lifeguards responded to a suspected shark incident at Thirteenth Beach about 5.50pm.
The beach remained closed to swimming, and lifeguards were assisting swimmers and surfers at the beach.
Westpac life saver rescue helicopters could be seen hovering over the area for at least an hour after the incident.
Mr White said rescue water crafts also responded.
It followed another suspected shark sighting earlier that same day about 50m out from shore at Bancoora Beach.
Life Saving Victoria deployed crews in an inflatable rescue boat to assess the situation.
But after a comprehensive search, the crew was unable to spot the shark, and the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter service was sent to survey the scene.
The report remained unconfirmed on Monday evening.
