The Melbourne Stars have once again taken the bragging rights in the BBL’s first Melbourne Derby of the season, with a six wicket win over the Melbourne Renegades.
But despite being one of the more anticipated rivalries in the BBL, it was good sportsmanship that came to the fore when an ugly incident had a delightful conclusion.

The Renegades’ Sam Harper was going along nicely but after a terrible scoop, he and Stars bowler Liam Hatcher collided next to the pitch.
Harper went right across the wicket and was looking for the ball as it went straight up.
Hatcher only had eyes for the ball – until their eyes met and it was too late as the pair slammed into each other.
The diminutive Harper jumped as they met, with Hatcher getting the worst of the impact.
But in a lovely peace of sportsmanship, the Stars’ Billy Stanlake, who fielded the ball, didn’t have a shy at the stumps as Harper was well short of the line.
Similarly, with Hatcher holding his arm on the ground, Harper forgot he hadn’t made his ground for a second and began walking back to Hatcher on the ground.
Then he twigged and ran back to his ground before running straight over to Hatcher.
The pair came together and all was well – but Stars captain Glenn Maxwell has roasted both of them in a hilarious pair of sledges as he checked if they were alright.
To Harper, Maxwell said: “You need to take care of yourself. If you keep trying to stand on blokes’ heads, seriously.”
Harper has a series of concussion issues over the years and has been involved in collisions in the past.
The smiling Maxwell then ran over to Hatcher and said: “(Harper’s) half the size of you, how are you getting beaten up by him?”

It gave some levity to what could have been a serious situation.
Harper has had concussion issues in the past while cricket fans will all remember the 1999 collision between Steve Waugh and Jason Gillespie which left Waugh with a broken nose and Gillespie with a broken leg.
Andrew Symonds said: “Good sportsmanship”, before adding “that could have ended up a lot worse”.
The match started poorly for the Rengades and Australian skipper Aaron Finch when he was bowled second ball by Maxwell, continuing a horror campaign.
But Harper and Shaun Marsh salvaged the situation, helping the side get to 150.
The Renegades left the door open however, losing 6/30 in the final 31 balls to be bowled out.
The Stars were steady with Marcus Stoinis and Nick Larkin both making 43 off 32 balls while Nic Maddinson’s 20 off 15 balls brought the Stars home for the six wicket win with five balls remaining.
It sees the Stars move into second on the BBL ladder, while it almost certainly resigns the Renegades to the wooden spoon.

Sam Harper has brought up his second 50 of the 2020-21 BBL season as the Renegades appear headed for a decent score on the board.
After Aaron Finch fell on the second ball, Harper took over, particularly as Shaun Marsh was dismissed the second last ball of the first 10 overs for 24.
The Renegades made 2/79 in a good performance in the first 60 balls but Harper has ticked along the runs.
But his partner Mackenzie Harvey was dismissed with the last ball of the 15th over for 29 off 17 as the Renegades were 4/120.
Australian white-ball captain Aaron Finch is going through a horror trot but hitting his way out of it doesn’t seem to be working.
In the Melbourne Derby, Finch faced up to Glenn Maxwell with his opposite number taking just two balls to get him.
Finch took a wild slog at the ball and played right over the top of it to be bowled.
Finch was so cranky that he punched a stump on his way off the field.
He has just 53 runs at 8.2 in his last six innings with even Maxwell not really celebrating the wicket.
Cricket can be such a cruel game. Horrible shot from Aaron Finch. Glenn Maxwell didn’t even celebrate that big wicket. I reckon he felt sorry for him. #BBL10 @StarsBBL @RenegadesBBL https://t.co/R6MBB2UAAa

It comes after Finch was dropped by his IPL team the Royal Challengers Bangalore after he scored 236 runs at 21.45, with a disappointing strike rate of 111.84.
He finished the tournament with 268 runs at 22.33 with a highest score of 52.
Currently in the BBL, after 11 innings, he has 159 runs at 14.45 with a strike rate of 117.77.
“I don’t really know what to say,” Andrew Symonds said. “He’s doing it really tough.
“There was nothing really tricky about the delivery, it was straight, it didn’t spin or behave irrationally. It’s a sad ending for him and a sad ending for the Renegades, they needed him.”
I’m still in disbelief at that shot Finch played. What was going on? #bbl10

That’s about what Finch thinks of #BBL10 – might be a dumb question, but when does this impact his international role?

Melbourne Renegades coach Micheal Klinger has demanded his “sloppy” side finish their BBL campaign with four successive wins regardless of whether it earns the competition cellar dwellers an unlikely finals berth.
The Renegades were left to rue a series of missed opportunities in their five-wicket loss against the Brisbane Heat on Thursday night that all but condemned them to a second straight year outside the BBL finals.
After winning their first ever Big Bash title in 2018/19, Klinger’s side have since won just five of their next 24 games.
And at Manuka against the Heat, they were left to rue two key missed chances against opposing skipper Chris Lynn, whose 50 off 40 helped his side home and back into the finals spots.
Afghan teen Noor Ahmad dropped Lynn on 22 at deep backward square off the bowling of Jack Prestwidge and, two overs later, Prestwidge thought he had his man before replays revealed he had bowled a rare back-foot no-ball and Lynn was recalled to the crease.
“The best way of describing it (the performance) was a bit sloppy,” Klinger said.
“We gave too many chances in the field. We probably gave them too much width with the ball as well, (and) we probably could have got an extra 10 or 15 runs, so you put all that together and we were just going at 80 per cent of our maximum potential.”
