Sonia Kruger has revealed why she wouldn’t be keen to co-host Sunrise if Samantha Armytage were to quit the show anytime soon.
Kruger’s name was floated as a possible replacement for Armytage after the current Sunrise co-host seemed to hint that she may not have a long future ahead with the Channel 7 breakfast show.
In an interview with Kyle and Jackie O on KIIS FM this week, Armytage admitted she could “easily” see herself stepping away from the show “down the track” for life in the country with her new husband, Richard Lavender.
When Jackie O told Armytage she sensed she “might give up Sunrise at some stage”, the presenter replied: “Well I’m under contract, so I can’t … but I’m very happy at my job!”
Armytage added: “There’s a lot of adrenaline in TV or anything live, and I would miss that. But at the same time, you don’t want that adrenaline all the time, because I don’t think that’s good for you. I’ve been a journo for 22 years … I’m very old.”
As for Kruger, she is basically the face of Channel 7 at the moment with hosting gigs on Holey Moley Australia (which starts Monday night at 7.30pm), Big Brother and The Voice.
But in an interview with news.com.au to promote Holey Moley, Kruger revealed she wouldn’t be keen to add Sunrise co-host to her resume.
“You know what? No,” she said. “I mean, look, you never say never, but the thing is I think I live better in the night time.”
Kruger continued: “There’s a school of thought in the states and there’s a couple of books that have been written about this: People who work in the morning generally don’t work at night and vice versa. I don’t know why that is. I think the audience just gets used to seeing you in their living rooms in the morning or they get used to seeing you in their living rooms in the night time.
“If you think about where I came from, Dancing with the Stars was the first big prime time show I did, so I was in everybody’s living rooms in the evening.”
Kruger spent eight years co-hosting Today Extra on Channel 9, but told news.com.au hosting a morning show “wasn’t really something that I set out to do”.
“I just think that my place in people’s lounge rooms is probably after 8pm,” she said.
HOLEY MOLEY AUSTRALIA
We’ve been seeing promos for Holey Moley Australia for months. If (somehow) you’re not across it, it’s Channel 7’s extreme mini golf competition where comedy and sport collide as competitors battle for supremacy on insane, super-sized mini golf holes.
Kruger is host with Matt Shirvington and US comedian Rob Riggle acting as commentators.
Riggle, best known for The Hangover, 21 Jump Street and Modern Family, steals the show with hilarious quips as the competitors tackle the holes.
“He’s a bit like Shaun Micallef in that he’s got that absurdist sense of humour,” Kruger told news.com.au about Riggle. “I just thought, this guy is a genius. Well, either a genius or nuts.
“I had comms in my ears as I was walking around (and could hear Riggle’s commentary) and I was laughing out loud which probably made me look a little bit crazy to people on the course who had no idea what I was laughing at,” Kruger said. “But it was Rob Riggle.”
Riggle and Shirvington drop plenty of double entendres throughout the show, which isn’t surprising given the suggestive names of some of the mini golf holes, including ‘Uranus’, ‘Hole Number Two’ and ‘Slip ‘n Putt’.
“Lube is used on Slip ‘n Putt,” Kruger told news.com.au matter-of-factly. “Lubricant is required to make that hole slippery.
“There are certain things you just can’t say without it sounding like a double entendre,” she added. “We’re talking about balls and holes.
“This show has everything that children love — it’s shiny and it’s slapstick and action packed. But for adults, there is a whole other level of humour,” Kruger told news.com.au.
Holey Moley Australia premieres on Monday, February 1 at 7.30pm on Channel 7
