Singer Vanessa Amorosi takes mum to court over missing music money

Award-winning singer Vanessa Amorosi is taking her mother to court over money she says she is owed from her music career.

The 39-year-old star, who has sold more than two million records worldwide, has filed the action in the Victorian Supreme Court against Joyleen Robinson.

The Absolutely Everybody singer is fighting her mother for money she says she is owed from her recording career and property.

In a statement of claim, Ms Amorosi alleges Ms Robinson engaged in “unconscionable conduct” in depriving her of touring income and royalties.

At 17, Ms Amorosi was living with her mum, a casual cleaner, in the family home at Narre Warren and working seven days a week while at school, court documents show.

She relied on her mother, who had no substantial assets besides a family home that had a mortgage, to manage her finances.

In about 1999, Ms Robinson set up VanJoy Ptd, telling her daughter she’d arrange for her income to be deposited there to protect her from creditors. Mother and daughter owned half the shares each.

Ms Robinson arranged for VanJoy to receive all of Ms Amorosi’s income and pay her expenses and was in charge of all its decisions and transactions, court papers allege.

For 19 years until about October 2020, Ms Robinson allegedly made all decisions on behalf of VanJoy, other companies she had set up and family trusts.

Ms Amorosi claims that during that time she was not paid money owed to her while her mother received management fees and distributed money to the trusts to the benefit of other family members or “persons unknown” without her authorisation.

Ms Amorosi claims she asked her mother to give her control of VanJoy and the other companies she had set up, but Ms Robinson refused, suggesting Ms Amorosi’s husband would “waste the funds”.

In one example of alleged mismanagement in the statement of claim, Ms Amorosi was allocated an income of $862,512 in 2000-01.

Of that, $390,000 went to pay a mortgage on Ms Amorosi’s home, but the singer claims she never saw the rest of the money.

Ms Amorosi, who is now based in California, makes other allegations of mismanagement by her mother in the 40-page statement of claim, with the matter to go before court at a date to be fixed.
