Serpentine-Jarrahdale and Kwinana bushfire: Blaze considered suspicious

[ad_1]

A bushfire that has destroyed at least one home and threatened lives in Perth’s south may have been deliberately lit.

An emergency warning has been downgraded to a watch and act for parts of Oakford, Casuarina, Anketell and Oldbury in the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale and the City of Kwinana.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services incident controller Peter Sutton said the official cause of the blaze was unknown.

“The Arson Squad have looked at the area and have done their role. They can’t find a cause, so obviously the leaning then is towards suspicious,” he told reporters on Sunday.

“So we just ask people to report any information — if they have dashcam footage of or around the area … to actually report that to police.”

In its latest alert, DFES said the fire was contained but not controlled, and people should stay on high alert because weather conditions could rapidly change throughout the day.

“The warning will be upgraded if necessary,” DFES warned.

“Crews are working to suppress the fire and strengthen containment lines.”

The fire, which started near the Modong Nature Reserve in Oakford on Saturday morning, has burnt through 282 hectares.

The rapid damage assessment team is examining properties and DFES has confirmed one derelict house has been destroyed.

Some roads have been closed, including parts of the Kwinana Freeway.

Western Power advises parts of Casuarina, Oakford, Anketell, The Spectacles and Oldbury are without power.

The evacuation centres at Serpentine-Jarrahdale Recreation Centre and Kwinana Recquatic have been shut down.
