Detectives trying to solve an alleged underworld kidnapping case in Sydney have released new footage they hope will help their investigation.
Friday’s release of new CCTV footage came as a senior investigator called a press conference in Parramatta.
“It’s a very serious event, and we’ve treated it very seriously,” Detective Superintendent Andrew Koutsoufis said.
“We’ve got a group of dedicated, committed detectives working countless hours dedicated to resolving what happened and arresting the people involved.”
The October 2020 kidnapping in the suburb of Ryde has vexed police, who have appealed to the public twice before to supply information that might help uncover who was behind it.
Police were called to a home on Morrison Road in Ryde after getting reports a man had been “violently abducted” from a carpark under the building.
Experts from the state crime command’s robbery and serious crime squad took over the investigation and managed to locate the victim three days later.
The alleged kidnapping victim, who was 20 at the time, was found injured near an intersection in the suburb of East Hills.
He was treated by paramedics before being taken to Bankstown Hospital for minor injuries.
In March, police released surveillance footage showing a 2016 white HiAce van that had entered the underground carpark just before the man was allegedly abducted.
Police said the van had been fitted with stolen licence plates.
The footage released on Friday shows two other cars that police think could have something to do with the plot.
The video shows a white Toyota Corolla and a dark Toyota HiLux that were both seen in the area after the alleged kidnapping.
“We don’t believe the victim was ferried around in those cars; however, the people in those cars may be able to assist with our investigation,” Superintendent Koutsoufis said.
He said the ordeal had been scary for the victim, but the man had recovered from his physical injuries.
“It was very scary for the victim and for anyone who may have witnessed the events,” he said.
“We’re hoping there will be someone (who was there) – there were vehicles there at the time, I’m not sure whether there was anyone else present but if there was … we appeal for them to come forward and assist with our investigation.”
