Police hunt trio after stabbing teenager with screwdriver at house party

The heartbroken mother of a Melbourne teen who died after a stabbing at a house party says she never got a chance to say goodbye as police hunt three men in relation to the “brutal attack”.

Jason Langhans, 17, was at a 16th birthday party in Tooradin when three men allegedly gatecrashed and fatally stabbed the teen with a screwdriver about 2.30am on March 21.

The Cranbourne North apprentice plumber was rushed to the Alfred Hospital, but his family made the gut-wrenching decision to switch off his life support this week.

Police are appealing to the public for anyone with information on the three men to come forward.

His brave mother Carolyn Langhans fronted the media on Thursday said she was “devastated and heartbroken”.

“I never got a chance to say goodbye … I’ve lost my son and he’s not coming back,” she told reporters on Thursday.

“I phoned him and asked if he was coming home for tea. He said, ‘No Mum, I’ll just catch an Uber later on’, and that was it.”

“It’s just utter brutal, I don’t know how a human being can ever do that to another human being – its cowardliness, it’s horrifying.”

Homicide squad Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper said the three men arrived at the party from the opposite side of Melbourne – in the western suburbs – with no intention to celebrate.

As guests were leaving and milling out the front of the home, a minor confrontation occurred between the trio and another guest who had asked them to leave.

Inspector Stamper said Jason stepped in to de-escalate the situation when he was allegedly stabbed in the head twice. Another man then went in and punched Jason, according to police.

Guests at the party then chased the trio before they disappeared into the grounds of nearby properties.

It is believed a further altercation occurred in the grounds of one of these properties, with Inspector Stamper urging anyone who was involved in that altercation to come forward.

The three men of interest were described as Middle Eastern in appearance, of driving age and were not from the surrounding area.

The first man was described as approximately 170cm tall, had dark coloured short cropped hair and was wearing dark clothing.

The second man was described as about 170cm tall, had wavy black hair, which was brushed across his face, and was also wearing dark clothing.

The third man was about 170cm tall, had a dark coloured short crew cut and was wearing dark clothing. It is also believed he would have visible injuries to the left side of his face.

Ms Langhans said her son “had his whole life ahead of him”, with his 18th birthday in July and grand plans to get his licence and go four-wheel-driving with his mates in Dargo.

“That’s all gone now – that’s all been taken away from him,” she said.

“These past three weeks have been horrible … every day at the Alfred just watching our son lay there, just wishing he’d open his eyes and talk to us but nothing.

“We’re lost, there’s a big hole in our hearts.

“Please, just let the detectives know so we can get justice for Jason and just hope this doesn’t happen to anyone else.”

Anyone with information should phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
