Melbourne tourism businesses and attractions have been handed a lifeline in the form of a new travel voucher scheme after successive lockdowns crippled the industry.
Victorians will now be able to apply for a $200 vouchers to travel to the city, on top of the vouchers already released to help regional tourism.
The state government has tipped a further $10m into the scheme with 40,000 vouchers worth $200 to be offered up for travel and attractions in greater Melbourne.
Another 10,000 vouchers will also be offered up to support travel in regional Victoria, which takes the total number of vouchers under the scheme to 200,000.
Industry Support and Recovery Minister Martin Pakula also announced a $143m “circuit breaker” support package to help more than 50,000 Victorian businesses after the latest snap lockdown.
Restaurants, florists, confectioners, hairdressers, accommodation providers, musicians and performers – who incurred costs such as the loss of perishable goods, cancelled gigs and foregone trading – will be eligible for support.
“Victorian businesses played their part in the circuit breaker action and this package recognises that the impact for many was severe,” Mr Pakula said.
The Victorian government has now provided more than $6bn in economic support for businesses and workers to help them through the pandemic.
