Money talks louder than fans in the DC Universe

[ad_1]

The Zack Snyder Cut of Justice League is justifiably winning over critics and fans alike, despite its four-hour running time.

But it seems we can’t add the Warner Bros executives to this list of fans.

Despite the fact they had this jewel of a film in their grubby paws back in 2017, they stuffed it up and tried to turn it into another version of Avengers and ruined the whole thing.

Two weeks ago I wrote that this was Warner Bros’ chance to rewrite history and embrace a Justice League 2 and 3.

Obviously I knew that Warner Bros was hardly going to change policy based on the gibberings of an insignificant columnist in Australia.

And, I have to say, I was proved right there.

Warner Bros CEO Ann Sarnoff told Variety magazine that the Snyder Cut is the “completion” of his work on the DC Universe and so there will be no JL 2 and 3 on the horizon.

Apart from proving – shockingly – that it’s not just men who make bad decisions, she also slapped down fans who were calling for the David Ayers Cut of 2016 flop Suicide Squad to be released.

That at least makes sense, as that has already been rebooted as The Suicide Squad and should be out later this year or early 2022, depending on COVID-19 and cinema reopenings.

You can’t have two Suicide Squads going at the same time, that would be like having two Batmans going at the same time. Oh, hang on, aren’t they doing that anyway with Robert Pattinson, Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton …?

Anyway, putting aside Suicide Squad, it just seems crazy not to capitalise on the excitement and positivity around the Snyder Cut and push ahead with the vision.

It’s not like DC’s upcoming films are so exciting that they can’t top Justice League.

Sure, it’ll be nice to see a Flash movie, as well as sequels to Aquaman and Shazam.

But another Batman movie? Another Joker stand-alone?

Come on, who wouldn’t rather see Superman turn evil, and Batman and The Joker get together to take him down?

Sure, Snyder may not want to do it.

But there are plenty of other talented directors out there who can, so that can’t be the reason it fails to happen.

Look, plans can change.

After all, it was only a year ago that Warner Bros was saying seeing a Snyder Cut of Justice League was about as likely as a worldwide pandemic that killed millions and forced us all into lockdown.

And then they both happened. But the decision-makers at Warner Bros are like executives everywhere. They just want to roll around on beds made of money.

And if they are going to perform a backflip, the landing had better be in a giant pit of money.

Early viewing figures suggest that more people tuned in to the Snyder Cut in the US than watched Marvel’s WandaVision or Falcon And The Winter Soldier.

That’s great but obviously it needs to keep going before Warner Bros will do that backflip into a pool of cash.

Even if, currently, that looks about as likely as the Warner Bros leadership taking notice of my rantings.
