Mercedes-Benz G400d on the way to Australia

[ad_1]

Mercedes-Benz will launch a diesel version of its tough G-Wagen offroader in July this year.

Prices start from $233,900 (before on-road costs), when the G400d arrives alongside the $289,900 AMG-tuned — and V8 powered — G63 that is already on sale.

The imposing four-wheel drive features a 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbodiesel engine making 243kW and 700Nm, the most powerful diesel engine ever found in a Mercedes-Benz passenger car.

The new model can reach 100km/h in 6.4 seconds, an impressive feat for a cicra 2500kg machine. But it’s thirsty for a diesel, drinking a claimed 9.5L/100km.

The G400d is a genuine off-road warrior using a ladder frame set-up known for its prowess in the rough stuff.

There are also three differential locks for different types of terrain and low-range gears make the G400d more capable at low speeds across steep inclines.

Inside the G400d lives up to its steep price tag. There are a pumping 15-speaker Burmester stereo, heated front seats, leather upholstery throughout and a sunroof.

Mercedes-Benz has equipped the G-Class with a comprehensive suite of safety gear and driver aids including a 360-degree camera and parking assist along with auto emergency braking, blind-spot warning, lane keep assist, and traffic sign detection.

Connectivity is taken care of via the maker’s dual 12.3-inch infotainment and digital dash screens. There is in-built satnav, digital radio and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The G400d is made to go off-road, but the reality is most will never venture far off the bitumen and the giant 19-inch alloy-wheels and plenty of stainless steel and chrome highlights are made for showing off on the streets of Double Bay or Toorak not on the hardcore off-road trails.
