A Melbourne man has been gone for a trip to markets to pick up some fruit with a Nazi armband brazenly on display for all to see.
One of Australia’s leading civil rights organisations has blasted the act “sickening” act, spotted at Moorabin Wholesale Farmers Fresh market yesterday.
A horrified shopper called the police after spotting the man. To their surprise, they were told it is not illegal to display the Nazi swastika publicly and they were was nothing police could do.
Anti-Defamation Commission Chairman Dr Dvir Abramovich said that “such terrifying episodes” show the need for new laws in stopping such clear displays of hate.
“What’s next, marching with Nazi flags in the CBD? Melbourne is not Nazi Germany, and allowing this sickening and brazen display by individuals who support Hitler and the murder of Jews has to stop,” he said. “Our city should not be the refuge and hub for these ‘Final Solutionists’.
“Australian Nazis should not be allowed to intimidate anyone, and it is simply unacceptable to think that in Melbourne neo-Nazi thugs have a license to openly brandish this symbol of extermination and evil, knowing full well that Victoria police is powerless to stop them.
The display comes just days after almost 40 members of Nazi group the National Socialist Network visited the Grampians region and the town of Halls Gap, about 150 kilometres north west of Ballarat.
The group has openly described Indigenous Australians as “subhuman” and has called for a “white revolution”. Online, the group said its hike was “fuelled by pure Cronulla energy”.
Dr Abamovich said such displays make the Jewish community afraid.
“This is a spit on the memory of our Diggers who died to defeat the Third Reich and the millions of victims who died at the hands of the Nazis.
“Imagine the terror a Holocaust survivor would have felt seeing this bigot and no one can feel safe when such terrifying episodes are allowed to happen.
“There is something frightening happening in our nation, and we should all be alarmed by the contagion of white-supremacist hate invading our life. I repeat our call for the state government to ban the public displays of Nazism. Enough is enough.”
