Man charged over Robyn Beever murder, belt, axe found with body

A Gold Coast woman worried about her parents’ wellbeing stumbled upon a bloody scene when she visited their home, with her father now charged with his wife’s murder.

Police were called to a Varsity Lakes home at 1.30pm on Thursday, where they found an 82-year-old woman deceased inside the garage.

She has since been identified as Robyn Beever.

An 82-year-old man, her husband Max, was taken to the Gold Coast Hospital where he remains under police guard with “non-life-threatening” injuries.

Overnight, police charged him with one count of murder, and has so far refused to be interviewed.

An axe and belt found near the woman at the home on Gerona Circuit are now central to the investigation, with a post mortem expected to be carried out on Friday.

Police said Mrs Beever could have died anytime after 6pm on Wednesday.

Detective Inspector Chris Ahearn said they were conducting a number of lines of inquiry.

While Mr Beever has no “significant physical injuries”, toxicology results will be key to determining whether he attempted to overdose after allegedly killing his wife.

“That (toxicology) will give us a clearer picture of what might have gone on there,” he said.

“The post mortem should be able to point us in the right direction.”

“There are various avenues of inquiry to try and determine what was the reason for this lady losing her life.”

Inspector Ahearn said police were aware of suggestions Mrs Beever had dementia and was in poor health.

“It’s very difficult to see people of this age murdered … and facing the courts for such a serious offence,” he said.

“It’s a tragic set of circumstances with a tragic outcome.”

Police are appealing for anyone who was around Gerona Circuit on Thursday at 1.30pm who noticed anything suspicious to come forward.

Beever is expected to front court when he has medical clearance.
