A man has been charged after allegedly driving his ute through a boom gate at Perth’s Optus Stadium and wreaking havoc on the oval.

Police were called to the ground on February 1 – day one of the city’s five-day COVID-19 lockdown.

“It will be alleged that at around 11:30am the man drove a black Ford Ranger at speed through a boom gate and a shutter door at the stadium before driving recklessly on the oval,” Western Australia Police said in a statement on Tuesday.

“The man was detained by staff until police arrived.”

A 29-year-old man, from Secret Harbour in Perth’s outer south, has since been charged with reckless driving, trespass and criminal damage or destruction of property.

He is due to face Perth Magistrates Court on February 25.

The West Coast Eagles and Gold Coast Suns meet for round one of the 2021 AFL season at Optus Stadium on March 21.

The 60,000-seat stadium is within the portfolio of Venues West, which owns and manages the state’s top sport and entertainment venues on behalf of the WA government.

A spokeswoman for Venues West confirmed to news.com.au on Tuesday “that there was an incident at Optus Stadium on Monday 1 February involving a member of the public which is currently under investigation by WA Police”.

“As such, no further comment can be made at this time,” she said.
