A Sydney woman has shared her heartbreak over having her home almost completely submerged in floodwater.
Brittnee Sheath of the northwestern suburb of Pitt Town was live on Channel 7’s Sunrise program when she witnessed the devastation for the first time.
“It’s hard to see,” she said, breaking down in tears and finding herself lost for words.
Some of the surroundings near Pitt Town, an outer suburb hugged at its west and north by the Hawkesbury River, have been declared “high danger areas” by the State Emergency Services, and evacuation orders have been put in place.
“Once floodwater reaches 7.2m the Pitt Town Evacuation Route will be cut. If you remain in the area you may be trapped without power, water and other essential services and it may be too dangerous to rescue you,” the SES warned on Sunday.
The Sunrise clip, shot from a tinnie on Wednesday morning, shows treetops sticking out of the water. Host Matt Doran and Ms Sheath round a corner before the roof of her home becomes visible, sticking up out of the murky water.
“We’ve got heaps of stuff in the top floor that we couldn’t get out, like all our personal belongings, but we’re all safe and together and that’s all that matters,” Ms Sheath said once she regained her composure.
She said she lived in the house with her parents, brother and grandparents.
Watching her home in that state didn’t “feel real at all”, she said.
“It’s not going to hit us really until we have to walk back inside to see what we’ve lost and all the damage.
“Having to start all over again is going to be hard, but we’re going to get there.”
