Government urges public to link accounts before rollout

[ad_1]

Australians are being urged to undergo a “simple step” to prepare themselves for the COVID-19 vaccine rollout.

The federal government has announced all COVID-19 immunisations will be logged on the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR), forming a vaccine certificate which all Australian citizens and visa holders will be able to access.

And with the first vaccines to be administered next week, the government has urged Australians to link their myGov and Medicare accounts.

Government Services Minister Stuart Robert said the move would ensure Australians could prove they were vaccinated quickly and easily.

“Linking your myGov and Medicare digital accounts is a simple step you can take right now that will help you and your family be ready for a vaccinated Australia,” he said.

Vaccine certificates could prove vital to domestic and international travel, after Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said in November the airline would require all passengers to prove they had received the vaccine.

“We will ask people to have a vaccination before they can get on the aircraft … for international visitors coming out and people leaving the country we think that’s a necessity,” he said.

The federal government said it would not compel aged care workers to receive a vaccine, but strongly encouraged them to get immunised.

But whether employers would be able to mandate vaccinations would be subject to any legal framework imposed in the future, according to the Fair Work Ombudsman.

Mr Robert has called for Australians to also ensure their elderly relatives’ details were up to date.

Older Australians were set to be prioritised by the government’s vaccine rollout, but were less likely to be up-to-date online.

Over 5 million vaccines are already registered on the AIR, which Mr Robert insisted would be protected by “state-of-the-art” cybersecurity.

Services Australia said there were nearly 20 million active myGov Accounts, 9.9 million linked to Medicare.
