More than 70 firefighters have contained a ferocious fire at a furniture factory in Melbourne’s north, after residents living nearby were told to avoid the smoke and close their doors and windows.
The fire broke out in the roof of Makedonia Furniture at High Street in Preston on Friday about 9am after triple-0 callers reported plumes of black smoke and flames.
Firefighters then arrived within six minutes to find the rear of the building engulfed in flames.
They managed to stop the blaze from spreading onto the neighbouring Preston Hotel.
Fire Rescue Victoria commander Andrew Dixson said three occupants inside the building had evacuated before fire crews arrived.
“Most of the building was alight when our crews got there – there were lots of flames and smoke,” he said.
Commander Dixson warned High Street in Preston would be shut between Bell Street and Wood Street for most of the day on Friday.
Ambulance Victoria and Victoria Police were also on the scene.
Emergency Management Victoria issued an advice message to residents in Preston and Reservoir, warning anyone sensitive to smoke to close doors and windows and turn off any heating or cooling.
High Street, between Cambrian Avenue and Spencer Street, is currently blocked off.
Motorists should avoid the area.
