A 22-year-old driver who allegedly admitted to falling asleep behind the wheel has been charged after his car slammed into four men as they changed a tyre on Sydney’s busy M7.

Ayomide Adedamola Awomodu appeared in the Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday and was granted bail over the crash on Friday night that left most of the men with serious injuries.

According to the accused man’s court attendance notice, the four men were on a fishing trip and had been travelling in a Toyota Hilux towing a boat trailer and a Volkswagen Golf before pulling over in the breakdown bay, south of Eastern Road at Rooty Hill.

They placed six traffic cones along the edge of the bay and were changing a tyre on the boat trailer when the accounting student’s Toyota Camry allegedly hit the Volkswagen, which was parked behind the trailer and had its hazard lights on, the document read.

The four men, aged 44, 49 and two aged 39, were taken to hospital with various injuries.

One of the group suffered massive lacerations to his left thigh, and hip and leg fractures, and police who attended the scene applied a tourniquet fearing life-threatening blood loss, according to the document.

The three younger men are in a serious but stable condition while the 49-year-old sustained minor injuries.

Mr Awomodu, who was represented by barrister Anthony Strik, was arrested at the scene uninjured and taken to Mt Druitt Hospital for mandatory testing.

The Canley Vale man was later charged with dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, negligent driving, cause bodily harm by misconduct in charge of motor vehicle and possessing a prohibited drug.

Court documents state Mr Awomodu, who is from Nigeria and in Australia on a student visa, allegedly told police he fell asleep behind the wheel and was woken by the collision.

Police will allege he also admitted to being tired and yawning prior to the crash because he had been awake since 5am and had been doing labouring work, according to his court attendance notice.

It also says police allegedly found a bag of cannabis on the ground near the driver’s door, and Mr Awomodu admitted it was his and had been smoking the drug that afternoon.
