The footage of a man’s wild arrest – nine hours after he allegedly kicked off a sweeping and violent crime spree across Queensland – has been released by police.
Central Queensland detectives yesterday charged the 27-year-old man, from the Rockhampton suburb of Wandal, over the alleged theft of multiple vehicles, which police say were then driven dangerously throughout the region.
Police allege the man’s rampage kicked off at 9.40am at a Meikleville Hill property on February 9, where he threatened a resident with a knife before walking to a neighbouring property and forcing a 44-year-old man out of his 4WD.
The 27-year-old allegedly took the man’s car, using it to evade police in Ironpot at around 10am that same day.
Police had attempted to intercept the 4WD in Ironpot, however the driver allegedly sped away, narrowly missing the stationary police car and an officer on foot.
Police allege he then drove the car dangerously through the town of Gracemere, rear-ending a station wagon on his travels, before abandoning the 4WD.
He then allegedly stole a Ford ute from a work site on the Capricorn Highway, using the car to drive three and a half hours west to Sapphire.
After attempting to refuel the car at a petrol station in Sapphire, the man then allegedly threatened a 37-year-old woman and took her red hatchback, which was later located in Anakie Siding.
At around 2pm, police allege the man then stole an Izuzu wagon and drove it dangerously along the Capricorn Highway, where the driver again avoided police efforts to intercept him.
Police allege the Isuzu evaded interception through a series of dangerous manoeuvres causing police and other road users to swerve off-road.
It’s alleged he then assaulted a 73-year-old man and stole his Ford SUV, which he used to drive to the nearby town of Emerald.
In town, the man allegedly collided with a Hyundai hatchback, but kept driving.
The SUV was driven toward the outskirts of Emerald where police successfully deployed a tyre deflation device.
The man fled the damaged car before allegedly assaulting a 52-year-old man in an Isuzu ute nearby. Police intervened and the man fled on foot.
He then approached a 61-year-old woman in an Audi wagon, allegedly forcing his way into her vehicle and making her drive a short distance down the Capricorn Highway before he let her and her two passengers out of the car.
The man then allegedly drove the Audi to Bluff, where he allegedly swerved directly into the path of a Toyota ute, forcing it to stop.
The 27-year-old then allegedly forced the 22-year-old ute owner out of the car and started driving it back east, towards Dingo.
Just before 6.30pm, police again managed to deploy a tyre deflation device on the Capricorn Highway near Emerald.
The ute stopped but the 27-year-old then allegedly reversed the car back into the front of a police car.
Finally, the car came to a complete stop, allowing police to pounce on the man.
Footage of the arrest shows a crowd of police swarming the allegedly stolen car and dragging the 27-year-old onto the road.
The man is handcuffed and taken away by police.
He appeared in court yesterday on a slew of charges.
The man has been charged with 35 offences including 10 counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, eight counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, three counts of armed robbery, two counts each of deprivation of liberty, evade police, wilful damage and stealing and one count each of obstruct a police officer, attempted armed robbery, attempted unlawful use of a motor vehicle, assault, enter premises with intent and trespass.
