Sydney Thunder captain Callum Ferguson has revealed he will not be offered a contract with the Big Bash League club next season, a decision which left the veteran batsman “pretty angry and ticked off”.

Ferguson was the team’s second-highest run-scorer in BBL10, accumulating 405 runs in 15 innings this season.

Perth Scorchers import Colin Munro was the only middle-order batsman to score more Big Bash runs than Ferguson this summer.

“Unfortunately I was notified yesterday that I will not be offered a contract with @thunderbbl for next season,” the 36-year-old posted to Instagram on Saturday.

“To the #ThunderNation, the club couldn’t be luckier to have your support, it was instrumental in helping us to consecutive finals runs. I have loved every minute on & off the field with this playing group, the last 4 years have been a great ride!

“I am now looking forward to what my playing future holds in the BBL.”

The Thunder finished third on the BBL ladder this season, but were knocked out by the Brisbane Heat early in the finals.

Speaking to ABC Grandstand, Ferguson talked through the initial “disappointment and shock” he experienced after being informed of the club’s decision.

“I was pretty angry and ticked off, as you can imagine, when I first got the news,” Ferguson said. “I think the initial reaction was just shock.

“We’d gone to the Thunder before the start of the season and we were looking to re-sign. They wanted to hold on it.

“I started the season really well, and we went back to them again and they wanted to hold again.

“Missed out a few times in the middle of the season and then finished really well. We went back to them again and they were noncommittal.

“My manager literally couldn’t get a return phone call from the Thunder for a week and a half I reckon. No response to text messages and emails, which was frustrating.

“We finally heard from them yesterday. It was disappointment and shock initially, and then it got to anger at different points throughout the day.

“I got to the point where I was like, ‘You know what, one door closes, hopefully another one will open’.”

Ferguson retired from first-class cricket earlier this summer, ending his Sheffield Shield career as South Australia’s fourth-highest run-scorer of all time.

He represented Australia in one Test in 2016 and played 30 ODI matches between 2009 and 2011.

Ferguson has managed 1935 runs in 10 seasons of Big Bash cricket, scoring eight fifties and an unforgettable century against the Perth Scorchers in 2019.
