A woman has been charged after police stopped a truck near Byron Bay and allegedly found 73 kilograms of cannabis.
The amount of the drug allegedly seized was described as “significant” by NSW police in a statement.
Police made the vehicle stop on the Pacific Motorway in the McLeods Shoot area on the NSW north coast about 3.30pm on Wednesday.
Highway patrol officers and detectives who searched the Pantech truck discovered the cannabis, an amount large enough to accuse the 24-year-old woman of supplying a commercial quantity.
The woman appeared before Ballina Local Court on Thursday, was refused bail, and ordered to reappear on February 4.
A 24-year-old man was also arrested and taken to Byron Bay Police Station. He had not been charged on Thursday afternoon.
“Inquiries are continuing,” a police spokeswoman said when asked if the man would be charged.
The police force uploaded a picture of the alleged haul on social media. It shows 16 large plastic bags propped up in front of a highway patrol vehicle.
According to police, the drugs had a potential street value of $480,000.
A 2016 study published in the American science journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence found the average joint has 0.32 grams of cannabis in it, meaning 73 kilograms of the drug would be enough to roll more than 228,000 joints.
