Sydney has been starved of its post-Australia Day summer bliss after receiving the heaviest rainfall so far this year on Thursday and the miserable weather is expected to continue.
The CBD was soaked by 19mm of rain in the 24 hours to 9am on Friday, while Wyong had the greatest drenching with 62mm, followed by the Central Coast’s Mt Elliot with 54mm.
The Harbour City stayed damp on Friday with blanketing clouds in the city causing poor visibility.
Beyond Sydney, heavy rain fell across the state with severe weather warnings in place for the Central West Slopes and Plains, South West Slopes, Riverina, Lower Western and Upper Western areas of the state.
The Bureau of Meteorology also issued a flash flood warning in areas around Wagga Wagga, Albury, Griffith, Narrandera, Cobar and Ivanhoe, with falls of 40-70mm possible later on Friday.
Meteorologist Jiwon Park said the rain would continue in Sydney on Saturday morning.
There will be a brief reprieve, but he warns this is unlikely to last.
“Then there will be possible showers and thunderstorms developing in the afternoon and evening,” Mr Park told NCA NewsWire.
Just a few millimetres is likely to fall on Sunday but the drenching will return at the beginning of the week and the dark clouds will likely linger through to the following weekend.
“The next rain event will be on the later part of Monday into the first half of Tuesday over the southeastern quarter of NSW,” Mr Park said.
“But once the front moves through on Tuesday, it looks like we may only get lingering showers.
“The peak of rainfall appears to have been today and later Monday into Tuesday.”
