One person is dead and at least five others are injured after a person reportedly opened fire inside a warehouse in Bryan, Texas.
The suspect is now in custody and is believed to be an Kent Moore Cabinets, where the shooting took place. However, police having ruled out whether another suspect was involved, according to KBTX.
Bryan Chief of Police Eric Buske told reporters the employee showed up at the company’s headquarters and began shooting near the warehouse. Police were called to the scene just before 2.30pm on Thursday (local time).
One person died at the scene and five others were hospitalised with gunshot wounds. At least four of those people are in critical condition. A sixth person was also hospitalised after suffering from an asthma attack.
Authorities said a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper was also shot while pursuing a suspect in relation to the shooting. The trooper is in a serious but stable condition.
Mr Buske said the person was gone by the time police arrived. Local media is reporting the suspect was later captured in the neighbouring Grimes County.
The motive for the shooting is still unknown.
The shooting forced a nearby school to go into lockdown but that order has since been lifted.
Kent Moore Cabinets released a statement saying the company was “devastated” by the events at the Bryan manufacturing facility.
“Our hearts go out to the families and the loved ones of those affected. We want to thank the many members of our law enforcement teams and other emergency personnel who responded so quickly,” the company said.
“We are fully co-operating with law enforcement during the investigation of this horrible crime. We ask that you respect the privacy of the family members of those who were involved.
“Right now, our focus is on providing support to and prayers for our employees and the extended Kent Moore Cabinets family during this tragic time.”
The horrific shooting comes just hours after President Joe Biden called gun violence an “epidemic” and an “international embarrassment” before unveiling plans to tackle the crisis.
“Enough prayers,” Mr Biden said. “Time for some action.”
With Congress unable to agree on broad new regulations, like stricter background checks for gun buyers, Biden announced six executive measures which he said would help bring the crisis under control.
Biden’s six measures included a proposed rule to “stop proliferation of ghost guns,” as firearms built from home kits are known. The White House says these homemade weapons are especially of concern because they have no serial numbers and cannot be traced after being used in crimes.
Another proposed rule will be tightening regulations on arm braces designed to stabilise pistols, a device used by the man who killed 10 people in a Colorado grocery store last month. Under the rule, pistols with braces would be classified as short-barrelled rifles, putting them under stricter control.
Other measures include boosting support for agencies involved in tackling community violence and ordering the first comprehensive report on firearms trafficking in the United States since 2000.
