Almost 20,000 schoolchildren across Australia have already signed up for the 2021 Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee — but any other aspiring spellers will have to hurry as registrations close soon.
The national competition allows students in years 3-8 to complete 30 spelling words as they beat the clock and compete with other students.
Primary school teacher Cynthia Palma said the Spelling Bee was a great opportunity for students to test their knowledge and challenge themselves.
“There is no limit of students who can participate and everyone who participates receives a certificate,” she said.
Clinical psychologist and Developing Minds director Kirrilie Smout said friendly competitions are important for children.
“Children can learn to manage disappointment, persistence in developing their own skills and to acknowledge other people’s skills and successes,” she said.
The spelling bee is big business, with the national winner taking home an iPad, a $250 HarperCollins book pack and the opportunity to meet Prime Minister Scott Morrison in Canberra.
Teachers and schools can register for the PM’s Spelling Bee at kidsnews.com.au and spelling-bee.com.au. Registrations close at midnight.
The state/territory finals will be held on April 29, followed by the national final on May 27.
