Microsoft working on Xbox Series X mini fridge after Skittles beat in Twitter poll

The man in charge of marketing Microsoft’s Xbox consoles has confirmed a bizarre new product from the company.

When Xbox announced the Xbox Series X people were quick to liken the rectangular block to a mini fridge, and after winning a social media competition, Xbox marketing general manager Aaron Greenberg has now said fridges mimicking the console will go on sale.

Last week was April fools but Mr Greenberg stressed it was “not an April Fools joke” and “not clickbait” when he said the company would produce the fridges if it won the Twitter competition.

The competition was riding the wave of “March Madness”, a popular college basketball competition in the US. Ahead of the competition it’s tradition for people to fill out a “bracket” where they try and pick the winners of each of the games in the tournament, and the eventual winner.

Twitter ran its own “bracket” for people to vote on which brands are best at marketing on the platform and the eventual final vote came down to a battle between Xbox and Skittles.

Xbox tasted victory instead of the rainbow and Mr Greenberg promised to make good on his word.

“Now that Xbox won, we will move forward on our promise to make those Xbox Series X mini fridges,” Mr Greenberg said.

The first of the fridges has been earmarked for the valiant-in-defeat Skittles.

Following the early comparisons of its aesthetic similarity to the common household item, Snoop Dogg briefly shared a video of an Xbox fridge on his Instagram page in an apparent marketing deal with Xbox.

Aside from Mr Greenberg’s confirmation we don’t know when the fridges will be available, how many will be made and what they’ll cost.

If they’re as hard to get your hands on as the next-gen consoles were at launch you’ll need a hefty dose of luck to get your own.
