Australians will soon be able to fly across the ditch to New Zealand without quarantining under a two-way travel bubble set to begin this month.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is on Tuesday expected to announce details of the long-awaited trans-Tasman arrangement.
A one-way travel bubble, allowing Kiwi citizens into Australia without quarantining, was established in October last year.
But Ms Ardern in March said a series of concerns, including the ability to contact trace travellers from Australia and a framework for handling outbreaks, had to be resolved before she would give Aussies the same tick of approval.
The “green zone” travel has at times been suspended due to outbreaks in New Zealand.
Tourism and Transport Forum Australia boss Margy Osmond has previously said two-way travel between the nations was an important step for the recovery of international tourism.
“After a torrid year for the sector, tourism, travel, accommodation and aviation businesses will now be rejoicing at the prospect of more Australian and New Zealand tourists, backpackers and businesspeople crossing the Tasman once again in the not-too-distant future,” she said.
New Zealand tourists funnelled at least $1.6bn into the economy, with 1.4m people coming to our shores in 2019.
