No more COVID-19 traces in Adelaide CBD wastewater

South Australia no longer has COVID-19 traces in its wastewater, the state’s top public health officer has confirmed.

Nicola Spurrier announced the “really good news” on ABC Radio on Friday morning.

She said there were no traces of COVID-19 detected in the Adelaide CBD catchment as of Thursday night.

“Of course we will keep monitoring it, but as you can appreciate that is the time we have had a large number of visitors into our CBD,” Professor Spurrier said.

She said the “strong” levels detected in recent days were because of interstate visitors staying in the CBD still shedding the virus.

The state is hosting one of it largest events, The Adelaide Fringe Festival, which attracts thousands of spectators from South Australia and interstate and will run until March 21.

SA Health said on Thursday it did not believe the positive traces were from the state’s medi-hotels, which are situated in the B11 catchment area.

The area covers the northern part of the city as well as parts of the inner eastern suburbs and services more than 12,000 people.

“We do not believe the detection is a result of medi-hotels,” SA Health said in a statement.

“Testing results (Wednesday) night showed a decrease in levels of COVID-19 traces within our wastewater; however, the results are still high.”

News of the positive detection from the B11 catchment was announced on Sunday.

Follow up wastewater testing again showed “strong” viral traces on Tuesday.
