Jeff Bezos ex-wife MacKenzie Scott marries science teacher Dan Jewett

MacKenzie Scott – the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos – has married a science teacher who works at a Seattle private school, according to a report.

Scott, one of the world’s richest women noted for her philanthropy, wed Dan Jewett, a teacher at Lakeside School, a source told The Wall Street Journal.

Her Amazon author page currently says she “lives in Seattle with her four children and her husband, Dan”, the report said.

Scott helped Bezos start Amazon in 1994. The two, who have four children, divorced in 2019 following the revelations of Bezos’ affair with Los Angeles TV reporter Lauren Sanchez.

The divorce left Scott with 20 million Amazon shares, or a roughly 4 per cent stake in the e-commerce giant. At the time, the shares were roughly $US30 billion ($A39 billion).

Following the split, Scott signed onto the Giving Pledge, setting a goal of giving away more than half of her wealth, which according to Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index, now sits at US$53.5 billion.

In a December blog post to Medium, Scott said she donated nearly $US4.2 billion ($A5.4 billion) to charity in a span of four months to support struggling Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Her new husband wrote in his own Giving Pledge letter that, “In a stroke of happy coincidence, I am married to one of the most generous and kind people I know – and joining her in a commitment to pass on an enormous financial wealth to serve others,” according to the WSJ.

The relationship between Bezos, who last month announced he was stepping down as CEO of Amazon, and Sanchez was first revealed by the National Enquirer, which published raunchy text messages between the two.

In a subsequent post on Medium, Bezos accused National Enquirer publisher David Pecker of trying to force him to stop investigating the tabloid’s expose of his affair.

MACKENZIE’S BILLIONS

MacKenzie Scott became one of the richest women on the planet the moment the ink dried on her divorce settlement in 2019.

Her shock split with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos after 25 years of marriage made headlines across the world, and ultimately became the most expensive break-up in history.

It netted the 50-year-old a cool $US38 billion ($A49 billion) – and since then, a series of classy acts and dignified public comments have ensured she’s also won the PR war, while her ex’s reputation is left in tatters.

The mother-of-four announced from the outset that she would give away the bulk of her vast fortune to worthy causes, and she wasted no time in putting her money where her mouth was.

In May 2019, just a month after the divorce was finalised, Scott signed up to the Giving Pledge campaign – an initiative founded by billionaires Warren Buffett and Bill Gates that encourages the world’s wealthiest people to dedicate most of their fortunes to worthy causes.

EARLY YEARS

The writer, author and mother grew up wealthy, with a childhood home in California and another in San Francisco. Her father was a financial planner while her mother was a stay-at-home mum who chaired a fundraising group.

“We each come by the gifts we have to offer by an infinite series of influences and lucky breaks we can never fully understand,” Ms Scott said in a statement at the time of the divorce.

“In addition to whatever assets life has nurtured in me, I have a disproportionate amount of money to share.

“My approach to philanthropy will continue to be thoughtful. It will take time and effort and care. But I won’t wait. And I will keep at it until the safe is empty.”

She met Bezos before he started the Amazon empire, which began as an online bookstore from their garage, inspired by MacKenzie’s love of reading.
