More storms ahead after ‘meteorologically different’ system dumps 150mm of rain in Qld

More storm activity is likely for southeast Queensland on Wednesday after a “meteorologically different” system dumped up to 150mm of rain on Tuesday.

A convergence band set itself up off the Sunshine Coast on Tuesday, bringing a lot of slow moving rainfall over much of the southeast that didn’t clear away until nightfall.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Matt Marshall said the system had dumped 150mm in total at Banksia Beach at Bribie Island, 64mm of which fell in just one hour.

In the city, between 70-90mm was recorded, with Kippa Ring in the city’s north recording 53mm in an hour.

“Normally, when people think of Brisbane rain they think of a clear summer’s morning and thunderstorms in the afternoon … This was a little bit different,” Mr Marshall said.

“This was more of a slower moving, meteorologically different set-up. It’s less common.”

The storm led to flash flooding, with roads cut in Rothwell, Carseldine, East Brisbane and Gympie.

At least 2200 properties in Brisbane and Moreton Bay lost power as a result of Tuesday’s storms.

Looking ahead, Mr Marshall said Brisbane could expect a few lighter showers and a potential thunderstorm ahead of a dry weekend.

“We will see storms fairly broadly across the state everywhere on Wednesday, except for the southwest and maybe the southeast coastal fringes,” he said.

“Large parts of central and inland Queensland have severe storm potential.”

The mercury is set to pick back up after a cooler start to the week, reaching 34C in Brisbane on Sunday.
